Oh my god. That's just... unbelievable. And oddly enough, another friend and I were just talking about Javert over in my art post. Javert: awesome forever.
I haven't listened to the musical in years, but I've still got my VHS tape of the 10th Anniversary concert. I loved Colm Wilkinson as Valjean, and Michael Ball had a wonderful voice, even if he wasn't quite my image of Marius. And Philip Quast. I have trouble picturing a musical!Javert who isn't Philip Quast, even though he looks very little like the Javert I picture from the book.
Alfie Boe looks very Valjean-like, though, so that's good. And Javert is supposed to be at least somewhat dark-skinned -- he was believed to be a gypsy in the book, if I recall -- so a black Javert isn't even so strange, really. I'm sad to lose the Javert!whiskers, though. And that's really too bad about Marius. :|
I know, twenty-five years - it's crazy! When I first heard about this concert I had a moment of "Oh, another anniversary concert? What number was that again? ...COME AGAIN?"
I'm like you, I haven't listened to the musical for years. I even collected various cast recordings and saw a couple of Norwegian productions, but the 10th Anniversary Concert has always been sort of the ultimate rendition for me. That cast was great - particularly Philip Quast :D
And oh yeah, I'd forgotten about Javert's potential gypsy roots. I remembered the bit about him being born in prison, but I'd forgotten there was something about gypsies in there.
I still need to see that! I was Skyping my mum when it aired and she was watching it and kept being so distracted and then made me jealous about what I was missing. And then I forgot it existed until I saw the Nostalgia Chick's thing a couple days ago. Need to watch! I like being all nostalgic for my Les Mis phase.
OMG EMBARRASSING MICHAEL BALL PHASE. I'm haunted by the memories of mine. Why is that a thing anyone ever went through during their teenage years?
Oh that's right, we're compatriots in the "once had an embarrassing Michael Ball phase" way! That is still so odd.
I'm starting to think that teenagers got some sort of internal clock than when it reaches a specific point, whatever the boy or girl was looking at at that point becomes and obsession. I think it's sort of hardwired into us to have that embarrassing fixation phase at some point, and some of us were watching Michael Ball when the moment came :P
