So, there is this old custom in Bulgaria - it's exact origin is unknown, but it is undeniably pagan. It'd be interesting to know how and why it was really started, though with such long-standing traditions, it's difficult to know.

There are some "legends" how it started, but I don't trust them AT ALL. I don't think I could find any serious research online, or in the town library. But I'll try asking some people who could PROBABLY find me some reliable information.
