Are foxes dangerous?

Just went out for a cig and the motion sensor outdoor lights in the yard went on and there was a big fox staring at me from a few metres away. I just stomped my foot a tiny bit and it run off, but jeez was it big.

That would have been cool. I've never seen a fox outside of a zoo.

I didn't know if I wanted to go over pet it or run for my life:D They're quite tame around here, I've see one from a bit further off before, but it was heading away from me that time so it was just cool. I'm pretty sure it was heading for the rubbish bin, but I disturbed it.
