So, this evening, I was given the chance to explain to a group of Ph.D. candidates and Master's candidates what fanfiction is. None of them had any idea what it is. Then, one of them asked if the stories were usually short.
God, I wanted to laugh so long, so hard.

I didn't get into detail or anything, but the discussion was about how kids are reading/writing outside of school, it just isn't counted by 'traditional' methods.
That convo with your therapist sounds like convos I've had with my mom.

Earlier this evening, I explained to an avid sewer what "cosplay" is.

I - It's been around since Virgil wrote fanfic of Homer! It's been around since Star Trek TOS! It's - have they never used the interwebs? HOW? *boggles*

I KNOW, right? Some of them are my age or possibly younger, and I've known about fandom and fanfic since I was - 12? 13? Like, so much of the literary canon IS fanfic, like you mentioned. Hell, how many Disney movies are fanfic?
I think it's just, they didn't know about the modern kind of fanfic? I used Twilight as an example, Bella ending up with the werewolf instead. But that NO ONE (except the teacher, who I've had three other classes with) knew? At least one of them had to be faking ignorance.

If you resisted, you are a far, far better person than I am.

I resisted, but it was close.
