domesticity

When I start to prepare for bed - a lengthy process, as I have certain medical conditions that must be catered to - my oldest dog, Harry, comes into the bedroom and lies on the blue-and-gold rug, eyes closed, quietly aware in that way dogs are as I move in and out of the bathroom. There is another canine in the house, but she is already dozing in ( Read more... )

Awwww. That's lovely.

I have a new rescue dog, and it's a joy learning her routines, and where she's happy and where she's not. Poor things, they are so subject to us, so I try to give her as much leeway as possible to carve out her world here.

Congratulations, and may you have a long and happy partnership! They are indeed subject to us, aren't they? So much so, they keep track of everything we do. It used to make me a bit nervous, but I had to think, well, if your daily life was at the mercy of large incomprehensible aliens continually milling around one, you'd pay attention as well.

They may not be meant to be special, but those are the moments you will remember always.

And one day, when my dear chap is gone, I'll read this and think of him.

I love this. And I love rituals, for all the reasons you've described. ♥

I have grown to love my rituals. It's a cool morning as I write this, and I'm in the garden with coffee and the dogs, reading the Times before I dive into work. Blessed moments.

The fox in _The Little Prince_ had quite a bit to say about rituals.

One of my two dogs (Penny, the white one at right in this pic) loves being under the covers at bedtime. Might have to try finding a "cloth-covered envelope" of a doggie bed for her, like Harry's!

Sorry for the delayed response. I don't check my blog pages that often, I'm afraid.

My miniature pinscher, Fletcher, lets me know in no uncertain terms when it's bedtime. He goes into what for most dogs would be "play" stance, butt up, front paws wide, and gives a sort of whimpered yip. Repeat. Repeat. If the human is not responding, use front paw with long claws to slap her arm. That'll get her attention!

When we go to bed, he drops down onto the bed leglessly. If you could call going down about 4 inches plummeting, it would indeed be plummeting.
