Roadtrip report #1

Oct 07, 2010 22:08

Day 1:
cynic51 and I hit up Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop for scones and pain au chocolat and a final gas stop before hitting the road at about 8 AM. Road conditions were wet, and parts of the Glenn Highway had a nice covering of snow. Stopped for gas and a stretch at the Glenallen Chevron. Stopped for gas and lunch at Fast Eddies in Tok before heading to the border. The US customs station is right on the US/Canada border, while the Canadian customs station is about 20 miles inward. Switched drivers in Beaver Creek, Yukon Territory. Snow has hit here, and has definitely stuck--getting out ust in time. First wild life seen: two moose by the side of the road. Drove by Kluane Lake as the sun was going down, which was very pretty. One more gas stop in Haines Junction, and pulled into Whitehorse about 14 hours after we left Anchorage. We got the last room at the Best Western, which was a two room suite, at a discount since we walked in so late.

Day 2:
After eating breakfast (not included in the room rate) at the hotel, we got back on the road. Very pretty scenery heading east towards Teslin. Gas stops in Teslin and Watson Lake (sign post forest!) cynic51 takes over driving after Watson Lake. After he starts driving, we start to see lots of wild life: a herd of bison blocking traffic on the road, caribou, more bison, elk (they were too big to be deer, two small to be moose), deer, and more caribou. Stopped in Muncho Lake Lodge for gas and a very expensive hamburger (they are the only year-round stop between Watson Lake and Fort Nelson, and get groceries trucked from EDMONTON twice a week!). Stopped 3 hours later in Fort Nelson. Staying at the Super 8.

So far, all is well. Very pretty scenery in the day time. Night driving is tricky since the road has lots of curves and there are no lights, since, well, we're in the middle of nowhere, Canada :-)
