I think I must have bogged down at the start of the middle flop of Citadel of the Autarch, because I never finished it.

I've read worse books (including one by Jeremy Clarkson, not-quite at gunpoint, as it happens:), but essentially yes. And never twice. I have indeed now finished the third one and was completely unsurprised by the rather pathetic deus ex machina ending; by about page 200 of the first one it was pretty obvious that it was going to be weak, IMAHO.
