1. Saturday, I went to the Dickens Fair with andres_s_p_b, chinders, and tenacious_snail. The three of us were planning to go anyway, and then tenacious_snail asked us along to use some discount tickets she had, so that worked out really well. It was neat! There were lots of highly shiny things to look at, so mostly we shopped (Except for tenacious_snail, who split off fairly early to go talk to people she knew ( Read more... )

There's a bit in the Wikipedia "cajon" article that mentions that some of the edges of the striking face are left unattached, which neatly explains some of the sounds he was getting out of it at the top that I had been surprised by. So it seems rather likely that that's what it was.

Making one wouldn't be that hard at all. (Making a good one, though, might or might not be trickier....)

Definitely the right thing. This how-to video indicates that I like the no-strings sound better anyway, which probably simplifies things.
