4th Street Report

We are back from 4th Street!

It's a very nice place, Minneapolis/St. Paul (I am assured they are different, really, and will glare at me if I confuse them, but darned if I can tell). We arranged for a rather long visit, relative to the convention, arriving around lunchtime on Thursday and leaving Monday evening. brooksmoses and suzimoses took an extra day at the ( Read more... )

In Minneapolis the streets make sense. In St. Paul they do not. In St. Paul, not far from where we had fish, 5th St. intersects 6th St., and 7th St. crosses Old 7th St. If you get lost in Minneapolis, logic is your friend. If you get lost in St. Paul, logic is a snare and a delusion.

If you remember whether the tea shop Singer likes was Tea Source or something else, I would be obliged.

It was Societe du The. The proprietor is rather a character; I was reassured having people around to ask him intelligent, well-informed questions and therefore keep him happy.

The streets in St. Paul, while they are harder to figure out than the ones in Minneapolis, aren't totally devoid of sense. It's true that there's no system to the names (unlike most of Minneapolis), and the address numbers are continuous (also unlike Minneapolis, where the address numbers jump to a new xx00 at the start of each block). (Disclaimer: I grew up in St. Paul, and then moved to Minneapolis.) It's easier to find most streets in Minneapolis, but both cities have one-block-long streets that have to be memorized. (I know more one-block-long streets in Minneapolis than St. Paul, mostly because 4 of them happen to be within 3 blocks of my house.)

Sounds great! As it happens, my LDR partner Nancy from Minneapolis spent the weekend here with me. :-)

You went rock climbing with Emma Bull?! Neat! It sounds like a lot of fun all around. I definitely want to hear about the birth control panel the next time we hang out.

Emergency quilting?

I think they went rock climbing with Elizabeth Bear. Still pretty awesome!

And I want to know about emergency quilting too.

Both of them! Therefore making it twice as awesome as either of you are thinking!

Suzi realized she was at some point going to run out of things to piece together while listening to panels, and would then have nothing to do with her hands. That would be bad, so she went and got some more bits so as not to run out. Apparently the folks at the store were very sympathetic to this plight.
