I just think taking care of the poor should be a whole community project. The problem with helping the homeless, I found from working in law enforcement in California, is that there is a large amount of mentally ill (thank you Ronald Reagan when you were governor. He closed about 90% of California's mental institutions to balance the budget and look good) on the streets. We need better care of the mentally ill, as well.

Yeah, the mentally ill and the non-neurotypical are the first to end up struggling on the streets.

They're closing a lot of the housing here in Australia, too - cutting down services, putting the weight of care on parents (which generally means mothers).
