Kate Freelander: Not A Small Town Girl

I've had this bouncing around my head for some time. It was going to be a post for halfamoon, but didn't get done before the end of the challenge.

In the manner of my Seven Moments Of Awesome for Teyla and Ziva, what follows is Seven Reasons I Adore Kate Freelander.

Great post! I'm still getting to know Kate, but I've seen and appreciated all the positive qualities you mentioned -- especially the sense of humor and the lack of Othering. It surprises me that some fans seem to dislike her so much -- I'd like to see more of her.

The Replacement Scrappy (warning: TV Tropes link) always ends up with a hatedom. And Kate's got a fairly ambiguous morality and street-smart cunning, which probably doesn't endear her to the people who preferred Ashley's gung-ho demon hunter.

I'd love to see more of her too! I'm just hoping they actually give her a storyline all of her own in Season 4.

AMEN! i love her as well. I get annoyed at all the hate she gets. Her and Will whom i also adore.

For me, it's less the hate, it's the indifference. And not just to her, but to all the 'modern' characters.

Curiously, as with Teyla in SGA, I can't seem to find people who are enthusiastic about her, broadly fannish, and who will publish their stuff out in the open.

I'm surprised how much Kate has grown on me - I never hated her or felt like she was a replacement Ashley or anything, but it really surprised me when I realised that Kate's been my close second favourite character for ages now. I don't know when it happened - it just snuck up on me - but your post details exactly why I love that woman.

Kate is the reason I'm watching Sanctuary. I watched S1 and was 'meh'. Then a friend started detailing why she liked Sanctuary, so I started watching S2 and by the time I got to Penance, I was hooked on Kate.

We need more Kate-love in this fandom: no fics, no picspams, no icons... I can't find anyone who'll be productive with me! (Do you do much art? I loved your drawing of her!)

Kate is an awesome reason to watch Sanctuary - I absolutely love how she interacts with all the characters and everything she does. It's kinda hard for me to watch some of the season one episodes now - I keep missing Kate and her awesomeness

A couple of years ago, I told myself that the only way I was going to get any better at drawing was to *gasp* draw more. And so I set myself a goal of doing at least one new drawing a week.

Uh. That resolution didn't really last. :)

I fully understand about skipping between fandoms! I'm presently Stargate Atlantis, Sanctuary, watching Fringe, Merlin, and I have a Star Trek challenge coming up. So I'm all over the fannish map myself!

It would be nice to run a weekly Kate-challenge where people post something Kate-related, whether it be fic or art or icons. Short, long, whatever. The only way she's going to get more love is for people to post more love about her!

Unfortunately, I'm new to this fandom (like, four months old) and while I have Sanctuary enthusiasts on my f-list, the productive ones are all about The Five.

I haven't had a chance to go look at your comment on the "all about Kate" post yet - no time, ARGH.

I'm sorry! I really am. I just haven't been writing fanfic lately, or I'd be writing fic with Kate. I was poking at some Sanctuary fic, but I think I just need to sit down and marathon my way through s2 and s3 again. And I did offer Sanctuary - with Kate - at Yuletide, but the Five-centric fandom did me in. Out of all the Five, I only offered Helen, and I think most of the fic produced was about them.

I can promise that, when I finally get in gear to write Sanctuary fanfic, Kate will be a large part of it.

(I actually did write fic with Teyla as the central figure sometimes. I don't know if you knew that or not. I promise, I didn't ignore her entirely in favor of Elizabeth.)
