I used to like PERN novels when I was a teen. I picked one up today, only to discover about a hundred pages in, after having had a second look at the cover, that it's written by a Todd McCaffrey and not Ann McCaffrey.

Okay, so he's her son. That still makes it perilously close to published fanfiction in my book. But then most of the PERN novels read ( Read more... )

Yes, I understand they wrote a couple together and then he started writing some on his own. I haven't read any of those, but boy, I sure LOVED her stories, even the non-Pern ones.

Have you read the Damia/Lyon ones? The Crystal Singer ones? Some of her non-scifi/fantasy ones?

I decided to go to Dragon*Con this year because neither of us is getting any younger, and I soooo want to meet her!

I think I've read the whole Damia/Lyon series but none of the others. "Damia" remains one of my favourite books of all time. I cry myself silly everytime I read the bit where Sodan attacks her family and her brother Geran whom she never really got along with has to mount a rescue.

I really hope you do and get some pictures :D I think Ann McCaffrey must be kind of awesome in real life. She's an April 1st baby, she can't not be!

I really liked the Crystal Singer series because I sing. I liked the first Doona book or two but never kept up with it. Restoree was pretty good, kinda creeped me out at first. I read the first 2-3 "Ship Who ___" books but haven't read the last few. I also read a couple of tiny ones, The Coelura and something with "gift" in the title. And of course, the Masterharper corollary series to the Pern series.

Ff the non-scifi/fantasy ones, the first I read was "The Lady". Horse training is the basis of that one. I liked it.
