Rob and I went to PetLand one day and they had a Green and Red macaw at the front of the store. The bird and Rob got along really well and it resulted in him playing with the bird for about fifteen minutes before we decided to leave. The bird ended up screaming at us as we left the store. It was kind of cute ( Read more... )

Apparently so. She'd give Mariah Carey a run for her money. Tui should have a reality show.

Toucans are pretty. If I owned one though I would feel somewhat obligated to name it Sam and feed it fruit and Froot Loops. As far as undomesticated birds go I like flamingos and penguins but I imagine it'd be pretty inhumane to keep them as a pet.

in linguistic trials, african greys have been used for a long time because of their language abilities. the techniques that linguists use to teach them colors and numbers and stuff is actually leading to breakthroughs in communication with autistic children. so if you got an african grey, you'd have a lot of fun teaching it new words and sentences and stuff. it might even prepare you for having a baby!!

This is true. I was reading about Alex the African Grey on Wikipedia. While he only knew 150 words (I read somewhere that they can learn up to 2,000) he demonstrated the skills that you had mentioned. I think it'd be fun to teach it to speak, especially if it actually said things in context. I didn't even think of the baby angle though, but you're right about that one too.

The more I think about it....the more I want a bird, especially one as smart as the African Grey.

Instead of getting something as smart as an African Grey, I think we should just get an African Grey. ;P

Actually, African Greys are supposed to live a pretty long time as well. 50 years or more, in many cases. But they're great...we have one in our family, which I will very likely inherit someday.

This is true. I don't know why 50 seems less bad than 70-100. 50 years from now, I figure that maybe he'll feel enough like part of the family so that our children would be interested in inheriting it after we die (or, hell, we might have a chance of outliving it). If we got a bird that lived to be 100 there's a chance that it would outlive even our children, I wouldn't want a living thing passed down to my grandchildren.

If you inherit it, you absolutely need to give me tips on what to do and what not to do in the event that you get it before I'm able to buy one.

Oh, I can give you tips any time. We got Gabby when I was about 13...so I lived with her for a long time before I went to college. We bought her when she was still an egg, and when she was a baby and they were still feeding her from a dropper we would come visit after school and hold her so she'd get to know us. She was so cute! :) They are a lot of fun, though. Gabby talks a lot, but she seems to be mostly into making noises. She imitates things like the noise your cell phone makes when you dial it, a zipper, other animals in the house, etc...and then she imitates people too.
