I have been left with the impression that younger girls were also popular objects of sexual desire because they were perceived to be less likely to carry STDs. Fun!

Oooooh, yes. It doesn't help that youth was associated with virtue was associated with health. In charming addition, by the early modern period, the widespread belief that having sex with a virgin will cure your stds was already throughly engrained in folk belief.

Of course, back then it was syphilis, not HIV. Not that this is any comfort, in an area prior to effective antibiotics.
