If it makes you feel any better, that's still the way I work about 90% of the time. I feel the beats in my body, tap my foot or rock my body in the chair or nod my head, and *that's* where the beat is, and then I cut to that.
There are more precise visual ways of doing it, which can be learned and which I sometimes use for fine-tuning. But I do things by feel, and I trust it.
I know the conventional wisdom is you should stick to hard cuts for a while and most dissolves are unnecessary, but I like dissolves and layers and I think I've got the music to support them.
IMO, if the music supports dissolves and superimpositions, that's the most important thing. I don't know about "most dissolves are unnecessary". I'd say that unnecessary dissolves are unnecessary! But if you need them, use them.
