Why I trust the liberal hotbeds of socialism that are the university science departments

Just a thought.

So, I was thinking about Alex's dad again and his whole-hearted acceptance of Dennis Prager, and I began to think - well, what would he say if I mentioned the research or data that I'd heard that contradicted what he'd read on Prager?  I believe that he would say that university data and scientists in general are liberal and biased ( Read more... )

I'm feeling inordinately proud of myself at the moment over the fact that I've never heard of this fellow.

Arguably he's self-labeled conservative, but amongst conservatives, he's supposedly more thoughtful than foamy.

I don't think of Science depts. as being liberal. Science Dept. tend to be more conservative from what I have seen.

But that is different than this guy I am sure. But then that's why I am not happy with either of the 2 major parties. Why do I have to choose between the First and Second Amendment? Why if I choose to defend my Second Amendment rights do I have to trample on the Pro-Choice Crowd? Why is it that I like the Libertarian Ideals but they always put up wing nuts to choose?.

I think the liberal vs. conservative in science departments thing is both a function of the school/location and the major (woo, 3d plots!). I've been to mostly liberal schools and encountered mostly liberal science departments, but I've seen the engineers and computer science types tend more towards the conservative. I've also noticed that say most of the BYU physics grads I've met have tended more towards the conservative.

your post reminds me of something my ucla e&m instructor once told us: the difference between working in academia and industry is in industry your peers prop up your ideas, while in academia they tear them down. in academia, you never need to point out flaws in your theories, because your peers will do it for you.

on a somewhat related but completely selfish note, i'm thinking of getting the "science. it works, bitches." t-shirt from xkcd, though i'm not sure if i'll get in trouble if i wear it at work... (i'm also thinking of getting the "online communities" poster for our office, seeing as we're trying to establish an online community for our campus).
