"call me a truck and slap me until wednesday!"

so i saw a midnight show of true love in a lake: the movie harry potter and the goblet of fire last night and i wanted to tell you all about it but i'm writing a ten-page term paper about rates of undetected and untreated HPV among lesbian-identified women and that takes up a lot of time plus all the time i spend asking everyone around me if they' ( Read more... )

get yee a pap smear test, min. that's all i've learned. but yesterday i learned that while spending, uh, the duration of three episodes with john sheppard's hair, and it was good.

speaking of which, i've fallen down a little bit on the secret items, i apologize, but i'm putting up 109 and 110 right now if you need them.

the trouble with trying to do schoolwork while i commune with the hair is that i keep getting distracted and forgetting to do my schoolwork. but it's worth it, really.

hey, no worries on the secret items; in the last five days, i've slept for 18 hours total, and until tonight i'd kind of forgotten about them entirely due to sleep deprivation and romantic comedies about two 14 year old boys. i've got everything up through 109 so far, if it matters to you and your bandwith. and again: you are the best of us. thank you.

Have not seen GoF yet so I'm studiously avoiding that part of your post... But I just had to comment because it's not often RL and fandom-life collide like this.
I work in an Indigenous Health service in Australia, and we're currently collecting samples for an HPV trial as well. You know, how many indigenous vs. non-indigenous women have it... So far we have like a 35% positive rate for HPV among our group, which is mainly indigenous, but that will be sorted out more accurately at the end of the trial.
OMG will not bore you with any more details, but yay for someone else on the other side of the world who I do not know from Eve mentioning HPV in their LJ post!! What is the prevalence among lesbians? Am nerd, clearly.:)

hah! that's very funny.

i'm in a grad program for public health and the paper is for a class called social and behavioral dimensions of health, so it's mostly about reasons why lesbians allow their HPV to go undetected and untreated. one of the problems i'm having is that there's no comphrensive information on prevalance, the best i've found is some very small sample-sized studies that suggest that lesbians test positive at a rate about 30%. what's really interesting is that 19% of women who reported only having had sex with women in their entire lifetime tested positive, suggesting that HPV can be transmitted in sex between women, something that hasn't been thought to be true. my paper is turning out to be more about barriers that stop lesbians from getting regular pap smear tests, though, because that's an area where there's a lot more research.

hahah, now who's boring who with details?

I'm outing myself as a geekus maximus here, but I don't find that boring at all. There's a reason I chose medicine as a career I guess. Now I'm all wonder-y about the actual "origins" of HPV, outside the human body I mean. But I don't understand the assumption that it wouldn't be transmitted in sex between women... It's skin-to-skin contact, not exchange of bodily fluids, so any heavy petting etc... Hmmm.

But your paper sounds very interesting! I can count on one hand the number of pap smears I've performed on women I knew to be lesbians. I guess it's the assumption that only women having sex with men need worry about pap's (and I'm sure many other things that your paper will eloquently and brilliantly bring to light). Good luck with it anyway.:)

I'm in Sydney and my friend Jen went to her doctor for a pap smear. After hearing that Jen's gay the female doc said "no penis, no problem" which... guh. Apart from that I have two friends who are so uncomfortable with penetration that they refuse to have a pap smear done. One's changing her mind, the other? Mountains will move before she goes.

And by the way, k babe, I've had a pap smear in the last year 12 months. Yay go me. *g*

I am going to see Goblet of Fire tomorrow, after a suitably large breakfast at the best diner in town. And while I'm risking being in a theater with ten thousand scared out of their wits eight-year-olds, I'm hoping the caffeine and sugar high from the pot of coffee and the pancakes will carry me through.

Also, your post had me laughing so hard I was crying, and then I proceeded to read it aloud to the rest of my household, who wanted to know what the heck I was reading. So much love.

i hope your viewing was a success and that you did not have to cut too many eight year olds! i think we're going to go again tomorrow afternoon and i fear the need for similar crimes.

I only hissed twice at Kloves's love of Hermione as exposition even in opposition to canon or sense. And, you know, how nice to know SPEW doesn't matter one bit. really!!

The last five minutes where we're joking and kidding was, you know, horrible. And I wish there had been more Sirius, because, damn it! SIRIUS! LIE LOW AT LUPIN'S!!

Despite all that, Oh, THE LOVE. THEY HAD A TRUNCATED VERSION OF MY FAVORITE SCENE IN THE HARRY POTTER BOOKS!!

I picked the right week to delete my Harry/Ron icon, I tell you.

You were the one who told me when I read the book that it really is the H/R book of canonical love. I'm so glad the movie actually KEPT THAT. Though I did miss the "let's not dance, let's walk around where all the couples are making out" part.

And how long until the GoF happy fades and we get to start worrying about OotP? At least we know we'll see Sirius for that. SOB!
