Lucas Drabble

This had been bouncing around my head ever since the episode Shock (?) and I’ve learned to let these things get out as soon as possible. It’s also because of the lack of Lucas-Love. D= Silly little drabble, spoilers I suppose but not really especially since I’d expect people to be caught up since this show is new.

He can’t help but be drawn into the room, even though he hates it.

He inches hesitantly toward the lab and taps on the door, ready to bolt if Dr. Fenway is inside. It’s not that he has anything to hide, per say, but it’s nearly an hour until it’s been a day since his last evaluation, and he wants to try to avoid it for as long as possible. Futility in every inch of the action he knows, but he does it just the same.

Just like how he can’t help but look at them.

He pushes gently, wincing slightly at the shuddering creak. He had heard from Ramsey that Dr. Fenway had fallen asleep in here recently, and he tries his best not to wake him if he is asleep inside. It’s late, around 2:45 in the morning, and he’d like to think that he’s the last one inside but he knows it’s not true. If it’s not Dr. Fenway it’s Cavennaugh or Dr. Caffery, he supposes.

Before the door is all the way open he knows no one is inside, despite the fact that the room is so dark and his eyes shouldn’t have had enough time to adjust. But somehow they had, and even if they hadn’t he would have heard the man sleeping. He steps inside, a ghostly figure hardly discernable from the rest of the room, and shuts the door.

He flicks the light switch, casting a meek glance around as they sputter on, just to be sure. The lab is silent and painfully impersonal, he notes faintly, distractedly, as his feet start moving of their own accord toward the tanks. He then wonders of Cavennaugh or Dr. Caffery feel the same compulsion that he does.

He stops just shy of the transparent tanks, morbidly fascinated by the rats that wriggle and writhe inside.

He had always been call mouse-like, he remembers with a hysterical giggle that he quickly smothers with a sweaty hand. Always meek, always willing to please-that one kid in your class who you only notice because he lets you look off his paper on the big test and because he’s so good at science. He had assumed no one would look twice at him, since if he had been in anyone else’s shoes he knew he wouldn’t have.

But then she came along.

Somehow she had managed to put up with his neurotic personality and still come to love him. They had plans to get married.

Then everything fell apart.

Now what was going to happen? Supposing he managed to actually survive this, which was a minute possibility in and of itself, then what? Would they even succeed? Would there be some way to turn everyone back into pure humans, or were they always going to be tainted? If he had kids, would they be mutated too?

Lucas swallowed past the lump in his throat and extended a hand, his long fingers barely brushing the cage, and had to hold back the sob when the infected rats moved eagerly toward him.

Comment/Crit welcomed. =)
