It reminds me at a very visceral level of the importance of the Evil Art Piece, though I think the specific statement that is trying to make is a bit different.
But yeah. Fundamentally, people fight over money (or land or resources) and power. Ideals (whether they are social, political, governmental, nationalistic, religious) are what are used to JUSTIFY said wars and create popular support for them.
