New Fic: P is for Parenting (PG)

May 18, 2009 06:40

In honour of Gen Fic Day, and because I suffer from a surprising amount of masochism, I signed up for sg-fignewton's Janet Alphabet Soup. Yay for 26 new fics about Janet! Go check them out!

Oh Gosh. so much to love here. Cassie and her attitude, Cassie's friend hitting on Daniel, Jack and the dog, Teal'c and his advice and Janet. Janet!

I am loving this so much!

Thank you! I was shocked and appalled when I discovered I'd never written Janet's POV. This hopefully makes for a decent start.

Absolutely adorable... I don't normally read gen-fic but I have a soft spot for Cassie stories. This was excellent.

Thanks, Dizzy. I think this is my first time writing Cassie, too.

I find some of the very best fics around are gen ones.

This is a great story. I love the way you show Janet trying to be there for eveyone, but just not having enough Janet to go around--and the way her friends pitch in to help. I laughed out loud when Cassie immitated Daniel's reaction to Rose! I love your descriptions throughout, actually. You make it all very easy to picture. Being a parent to a teenager it hard enough, but when you are trying to save the world at the same time... Almost impossible.

Thank you. I had a fun time trying to figure out how each of them would interact with her during her trying day.

And thanks for the compliment on the descriptions. I'm much more comfortable with dialogue than descriptions; it's good to know when something works outside my own head. That being said, my descriptions are always a tonne better after amaranthtraces takes a betaing whack at them, so she probably deserves most of the credit.

Oh really? Which of the three or four words I changed in this story are you referring to?

Well, in this one you helped with describing what Cassie was doing at the start and you made the lab scene more vivid. And probably a bunch of other stuff I'm not remembering at the moment.

“I thought I’d get better at being a mom as time passed, but I don’t seem to be getting the hang of it.”
Tell it! It makes me feel better to see even a fictional character say it! My Small Child changes strategies before I have a chance to learn to deal with the last one!

Great Janet and Cassie interaction, much as it pains me to read it. (I can only imagine when Small Child reaches the teen years. We have a few left, though you wouldn't necessarily believe it if you could hear the mouth on my kid.) Also a great job with Daniel--an unexpected bonus! Janet's still the main attraction, though.

Yeah. Me too. I'm nowhere near the teenage stage (in fact, T-Fap isn't even talking yet), but I'm already baffled half the time. I can't imagine how I'm going to deal with teenager-hood. Hopefully with the same amount of grace Janet seems to manage, though I doubt it.

I seem to be physically incapable of not having him be a big part of a story. I really tried in this one, but he still kinda took over.

I adore Janet & Cassie fics! Lovely realism - typical teenage behaviour, but Cassie appreciating Janet really; Janet trying to balance being a mom with being the CMO, and the rest of the gang helping out. And Rose flirting with poor Daniel, hee. Nice job!

Ah, good. I'm glad the teenage behaviour came through okay. I was working from observations of gaggles of them on buses and distant memories of my own misspent youth.

Balancing working and being a single mom would be rough on anyone, let alone someone in her position who's relatively new at being that mom.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the kind comments.

Yeah. Most Janet & Cassie fic doesn't seem to take into account that Janet suddenly got a daughter. No making a decision and preparing over time while the adoption process occurred. Just poof, single mom. I'm sure she wouldn't change it for the world, but wow, that's quite a challenge.

Oh, I agree. She didn't get to practice being a mom while Cassie was too young to remember all the times she screwed up. She didn't get time to prepare her life or her home while waiting for an adoption to happen. And Cassie had just been through the horrible ordeal of everyone she'd ever known dying in front of her, almost dying herself, and then being thrust into this strange culture that's not familiar at all. I wonder how Janet and the others prepared her for everything being a kid in the US is about, besides buying her a dog, I mean.

Y'know, I've often wondered what happened the first time Cassie ran into someone who was actually from Toronto. Someone who would know she was lying based on her pronunciation of the city's name alone. :)
