You do recall "Entering Marion" by John Forster, don't you? Britain has no monopoly on embarrassing English place names...

OTOH, none of the MA towns mentioned have particularly embarrassing names on their own. It's being paired with the "Entering" sign that makes the humor.

I would suggest, however, that any resident of the Greater Lancaster, PA area who reads the NYT article will probably feel much better about Intercourse, Bird-in-Hand, et al.
