It's a good piece. I was curious about the Sam Adams quote, and tried to find more with a web search, but couldn't find anything more than that sentence without context. If by "popery" Adams meant attempts by the Catholic Church to control governments, then he was really saying the same thing Newdow is. In the 18th century that was a real issue.

I tried to find some information by looking in Mark Puls's Samuel Adams: Father of the American Revolution. Looking in the index I found "Catholics, see Roman Catholics," but no entry for "Roman Catholics" or "popery."

In any case, I don't think the Adamses were typical of the religious views of the Founders, since they came from a background that was still strongly influenced by the Puritans.
