Once-ler sat at his desk, hunched over paperwork. He hadn't said a word to anyone all day, and downright scared a Blondette with his flat stare. He had no intention on being hurt or used, and was going to do whatever it took, to ensure he stayed safe.

"What has he done for you that merits you helping him?"

Once frowned, standing up. "I'm not going to let anything bad happen to my friends. Even if...they don't care about my wants. That doesn't mean I'm going to be the supernatural whipping boy.
What's going on with Gordon?"

The entity smiled, "Wheats can't die because he's basically time. But Gordon...well, you'll get over it. Remember, he doesn't care what we wanted." But he always cared for what Once needed.

He stood up so fast, he went a little light headed. "You've got to be kidding me----freaking ghosts---why doesn't anyone ever listen to me? "I...I am a soldier of Heaven," Once can hear his packbrother's ragged voice, "I will defend every downtrodded...soul...I will provide for my brother...a better world. It's all I can do."
That lullaby suddenly starts to make sense: he was always protecting Once, taking the hurt away with him.
