Destiny

Once-ler sat at his desk, hunched over paperwork.  He hadn't said a word to anyone all day, and downright scared a Blondette with his flat stare.  He had no intention on being hurt or used, and was going to do whatever it took, to ensure he stayed safe.

Whether Once was coming or not, the time to act was now: this injustice had to be corrected by any means necessary. If even Epaphras has started sending them help via belladonna-infused arrows for Wheatley, and the Lorax laying down the law for his animal friends are evidence of a rebellion just waiting to happen, what is ( ... )

"There's nothing wrong with someone that's not going to exist much longer, neither here or in your mind. You want to be your own man again. Or do you want to be used in being a Guardian? Remember how much it sucked? Day in and day out, a thankless job! Because he DIDN'T FIGHT HARD ENOUGH FOR YOU." Greedler almost hisses with glee.

"What has he done for you that merits you helping him?"

"What do you mean--"

Once frowned, standing up. "I'm not going to let anything bad happen to my friends. Even if...they don't care about my wants. That doesn't mean I'm going to be the supernatural whipping boy.

What's going on with Gordon?"

Greedler grinned evily, "He went ahead and tried to fight Sly with his idiot husband, if you can call it that. Que sera sera. You know, he should've known better than to carry that creepy flower with him."

The entity smiled, "Wheats can't die because he's basically time. But Gordon...well, you'll get over it. Remember, he doesn't care what we wanted." But he always cared for what Once needed.

"What?!"

He stood up so fast, he went a little light headed. "You've got to be kidding me----freaking ghosts---why doesn't anyone ever listen to me? Just leave well enough alone, they'd already been dead for 150 or so years, didn't matter if it were vampire or fire! ...I'm going to help him. But this is it. Nothing beyond this."

He strode for the door.

What Once doesn't realize is that limitation gave Greed power. The door slammed shut and locked, "What's going to stop him from trying again? Let him die and the apple of discord goes with him. He's a dope! He's always helping people! Like the Peanut! Always thinking of others before you! Doesn't that piss you off?"

"Look at me, we're better off. Screw destiny, remember? We can make our own timelines, our own destinies! So what if the animals are stuck with Sly as a guardian! What matters is that you have a happy normal life again, with your girlfriend."

These are basically the same words Once-ler has used, only mirrored back.

"He can think of others---what the heck, man?"

Once frowned and jiggled the door handle. "I don't want anything bad to happen--"

"He shouldn't. Once, deep down, we know he's crossed the line...remember? He's using you."

The bond showed Sly lifting Freeman's face and murmuring something in French. Whatever it was, it made the humanized angel spit in his face.

"Just let go."

Once blanched and turned on his heel, running for the glass doors that lead outside. "If that's so, I want to chew him out in person, and that works out much better if both parties are living."

His words were flippant only on the surface.

Greedler could only laugh as his good side raced to the windows, "You can't fly, jackass. I CAN." All those powers Once repressed, they have incarnated in the entity.

"I'm not going to try to fly, I'm going to climb, asshat."

Just like at home when the teasing got to be too much, when he was a kid.

"You know, if you save him...you become guardian." That was inescapable and Greed knew it. "Stay."

"You didn't read the research...you were destined. Stay and you can flip off destiny. We're a sane man; no servitude for us. The moment you save the angels, you are challenging Sly. And you know that? Is that prick worth it?" Greed was starting to get desperate as Once climbed down.

"I don't intend to live up to any expectations or destiny or any crap like that. I don't intend to lift a finger for anyone aside from my friends. Rest of the Valley can burn for all I care. Norma and I can move, I can run this place remotely---she can pick some place---maybe she'd like Paris or something. I can learn to stomach a city for the sake of ditching this insanity, believe me."

He carefully lowered himself from the window.

"No matter where you go...the blood spilled in your inaction will always haunt you. Your friends aren't just the humans," that was Sly getting in on a little more torture, via the bond that was slowly becoming thin.

"I...I am a soldier of Heaven," Once can hear his packbrother's ragged voice, "I will defend every downtrodded...soul...I will provide for my brother...a better world. It's all I can do."

That lullaby suddenly starts to make sense: he was always protecting Once, taking the hurt away with him.
