Yeah, I'm bummed too. When I first read the book, about fifteen years ago, I felt the worst for Prideth. At least Brekke had people - and other dragons - who loved her. But Prideth ended up being killed due to the careless cruelty of the woman she was essentially born to love and serve. :(

Yeah, I kind of like my version of events. So much so that I'm tempted to keep going and find out what happens next.

Heh. I don't normally like messing with canon, but this time I felt kind of righteous. Poor Brekke. Poor Wirenth. Poor Prideth.

You know what's odd? When I first read Dragonquest, long long ago, the character I felt the WORST for was Prideth. I mean, she was BORN to be loving and helpful, and she ended up with the awful Kylara, who ended up getting her killed. :( But I never really thought of writing an alternate version until Zulu requested it. Now I kind of want to keep going. Obviously, they're going to try to kick Kylara out of High Reaches, which means Brekke is Weyrwoman, which complicates things for her and F'nor. AND, after the mating flight, T'bor rushes off to Nabol in a lather, to confront Meron and Kylara, and there's a dramatic duel, and F'lar's still messed up from his duel with T'ron, so he isn't very helpful and...I don't know what happens next. :)

I really liked this. It's been ages since I read Dragonquest, but you write F'nor and Brekke quite well. The dialogue was spot-on! If I didn't remember how achingly sad this whole drama made me, I could have sworn it was actually part of the book. Take a bow!
