*sigh* Such desperation and sadness and longing. Makes me wibble. :(

Lovely story, my dear!

"What's that?" Ted asked.

"Things you forgot, of course. Extra sweaters, scarves, long underwear…"

I love the peek at long running domesticity this opening gives it. And it's definitely Andromeda of the packing spells.

I wondered, for about half a second, when we learned that Ted had left home to keep ahead of the Snatchers and the consequences of the Muggle-born Register, why he'd gone alone. And then I remembered Tonks's pregnancy, and the up-and-down nature of her marriage to Remus, and concluded that Andromeda had never really had the chance to choose. Without Ted there she was safe, and their daughter needed her, so she couldn't go off with him no matter how much she might have wanted to.

There were many sad things about the tragedies that befell the Tonks family in Deathly Hallows, but I think that was one of the saddest: that she couldn't follow the choice she'd made a quarter century earlier right the way to the end. This story pinpoints those non-choices they're both faced with very well.

Thank you. I'm so glad that you liked this.

I sometimes wonder if it would have been more poignant without the smut. Other times, I like that they're still so hot for each other after 20+ years.

I know what you mean about the smut. It's a tough call, but I think it works.

Actually, that's the point at which my own half written version of this story got set down, the point at which I had to decide what form the goodbyes would take. Several months later I've still not really decided whether there'd be smut or not. However, I suspect that unless they were indifferent to each other and only staying together out of sheer stubbornness because of all the difficulties they'd had to go through to get married in the first place, there'd have been some level of sexual tension to their farewell.

And no, I don't think they're indifferent, from the brief glimpse we get of them in canon. Which makes their hard choices even harder to bear.

Well, I didn't really have a choice, since mine was written for a smut-centric community. *g* Still.

Lovely and poignant Andromeda/Ted. So sad, but glad to know that they still had mad love for each other. ;P

Really touching Andromeda/Ted. I was SO disappointed that we didn't get to see much of them in DH, so this fills a gaping hole in their story. I like all the brief references to their past, the inanity in Andromeda bringing Ted more things to pack, and Ted's jokes even as they cling to each other one last time.

A bit behind the times, but I found this in ChocolateFic archive and decided to take a gander. It was good! Your characterization of Andromeda was very well done (and the reference to The Last Unicorn in the title didn't hurt. ^^)

Thank you so much! :)

And thank you for pointing me to Chocolate Fic. I'd never heard of it, but it looks like a good place to look for new fic.
