Edith Hamilton is always a great place to start.

I also recommend Robert Graves. I have a soft spot for the d'Aulaires, but it's not comprehensive and rather cleaned up, but SO PRETTY.

Yes please do the thing! D'aulaires might be good for inspiration just because the illustrations are beautiful.
