An estimated 5,000 people marched in Concord, NH yesterday morning, including me. That number is small compared to other marches nation- and world-wide, but New Hampshire is not a very populous state. We stayed for about an hour and a half, and I was heartened by the number of people of color who spoke. (New Hampshire is also a very white state.) ( Read more... )

I don't think Trump will notice or care because he lives in Delusianal Bizarro Land, but Congress will have to take some notice. Even Republicans who want to get re-elected are going to be tuned into the idea that three or four MILLION people are not only opposed to what they're doing, but opposed enough to leave the house, go to the nearest city or DC itself, and march for hours in the cold to make a point of it. (There were marches in pretty red areas, too, like Texas and Alaska. Somebody said on Facebook, 'you know things are bad when people are marching in Alaska in January.')

I know there are also people who are trying to minimise it, and call those millions of people 'attention seekers' and tell them to get over it, but fuck 'em.

I don't know. I mean, I hope you're right, but I keep thinking about how the overwhelming majority of Americans want stronger laws about background checks, and Congressional Republicans nixed that, even after Sandy Hook. :\

I don't think the marches will make a difference to Trump or the Republicans in Congress, but if they give people the strength to keep fighting, then I don't think they were a waste of time and energy in the slightest.

I think that's exactly right. I know I'm feeling more hopeful and more motivated.

Yeah, it's nice to know we can generate these crowds and this level of enthusiasm. We need to not let it wane. And we also need to not let the perfect become the enemy of the good, as we so often do. *sigh*

Yes! For our own sakes, we need to fight every day (even if that fight comes in sometimes just giving ourselves the day off). Glad you marched. I've been amazed by how many people turned out world-wide.

Apparently over 3 million people marched! That's incredible.
