I've always had a soft spot for Faith, and thought she got a really crappy deal from the Council, and...just about everybody. It's pretty damn sad when your quite competent and brave Vampire Slayer has to turn to ANGELUS for comfort and advice! D:
Re: Louisa May Alcott, I think Little Women is good for a glimpse at what her own family life what like, given how much she based it on them. But for enjoyment by a more modern readership, I always recommend An Old-Fashioned Girl and Eight Cousins-there's some interesting ideas on feminism, family, and social values tucked in there, subtly slid in among the wholesomeness.
To get a better idea of the range of her writing ability, you ought to look for some of her short stories she wrote under pseudonyms. The same writer who produced collections like "A Garland for Girls" also wrote "Behind the Mask" (one of my favorites) and the manuscript for the novel, "A Long Fatal Love Chase". I want to check out some of her non-fiction writing, like "Hospital Sketches" and other works, when I'm able.
I love Faith too. The Council certainly did wrong by her, but I think a lot of things that happened to her were her own fault too. Stealing, killing that guy, torturing Wesley ... that wasn't very nice. But I love that Faith is so human. She knows she did wrong, and she really, really struggles to make things right. Her redemption is totally believable to me.
I read "The Inheritance" a while back, and remember thinking it was fun. I was actually thinking of getting "A Long Fatal Love Chase" since it sounds intriguingly trashy gothic, and I was half-planning on buying some books today anyway. I'd love to get hold of some of her other books. I'll have to see if the public library has some.
