This is one of the many reasons I really hate the whole Must Avoid Mary Sues At Any Cost culture of fanfic -- it greatly discourages people from ever writing OCs, and I really think there should be a place in fandom for creating OCs in a particular setting and having that be a valid fanfiction choice. People do the converse, moving canon characters into a different setting, so why not this? Not everyone would read it but not everyone reads any other genre. I for one would read it. :)
It depends on the fandom, I think. I've been in others that had fewer canon characters, which were more accepting of original characters.
One of the reasons I liked writing my Joanna and Sam stories so much is that they're basically OCs. I mean, I have to confine them to certain parameters, but all we have from canon are their names and their relations to other characters.
If I ever write that sequel to "This Is Why We're On The Edge" there'll be a few true OCs.
That's true about the academic bias. I forgot to mention it, but I encountered it in college when I asked if I could possibly do something creative in lieu of an honor's thesis. The department head, who was snotty and self-important to begin with, told me that it would undermine the scholarly aspect of the project. Bleh. I couldn't stand that guy.
I guess I just need to find something original to say.
It is hard. When I was writing original stories, trying to get people to read and tell me what they think was so hard. All these online resources didn't exist back then.

I'm less sad about my original stories falling by the wayside now that I have an occupation I like.
