I don't care for zombie stories, either. Just- not interested at all. The Mists of Dawn sounds like it might be okay- but a person too perfect at everything, in a primeval, prehistoric setting? you're making me think of Ayla in Clan of the Cave Bear (or, especially, the second book in the series). Have you ever read Saturday the Twelfth of October by Norma Fox Mazer? time-travel story with a teenager girl protagonist. I liked it a lot.
Saturday the Twelfth of October sounds really familiar, I think it's in my To Read pile.
Years back I might have been okay with zombie stories, but The Walking Dead TV series completely killed any interest I had in them. It's too bad, because a 'dog in a zombie apocalypse' has potential to be interesting.
