Sounds like the next step up after kids have finished the Warriors series by Erin Hunter (oh who am I kidding, that series will NEVER END!)

Oh yes! It would be a great (and big) step up from that. Not to put the Warriors series down (I read a bunch of the books, early on), but this book was so much more realistic. I don't think it was YA, but it seemed like it would mostly be okay for younger folks. Cats did die (frequently, it was a hard world), but it wasn't graphic. I'm pretty sensitive about that kind of thing, and the deaths didn't bother me at all.
