gonzostar is from the future. She had gastric bypass surgery a couple months before I did, so her LJ is a preview of everything I'm about to go through. Having a set-up like this is such a good resource and relief, even though it happened completely by chance ( Read more... )

I had mrsa. I did not know that that makes you more likely to get it again. But it makes sense.

I had to see a special doctor, one from infectious control, and she told me about it. Some small part of it stays in your body forever, waiting to pop up again.

So if you get it once, chances are you'll get it again (and again and again...).

It sounds pretty risky. Consulting with the doc sounds like a good plan.

Yep! It might be moot anyway. If insurance won't cover it, it's off the table for sure. If they will cover it, then I have to decide...

You are my future! :D If I keep working hard, that is.

I get treated more kindly now, I feel like.

Agreed. My goal in losing weight wasn't to become skinny (though in the beginning I did think that would be nice), but instead to not be so fat people would stare at me like I was a freak. I don't mind being somewhat overweight, just not over the 'freakish' line, which I used to be.

I think 15 pounds of skin would make anyone uncomfortable, though for me my stomach used to weigh more (since it was fat + skin) so I guess just the skin is an improvement to me.

I'm glad they at least covered half for you!

I'll post again after I see my surgeon at the end of next week.

Tough decision... You're allergic to vancomycin? I'm assuming the pill you're referring to is Zyvox since it's only one of two oral agents that are active against MRSA, the other being Bactrim, which is cheap, but has a poor allergy profile and usually isn't nearly as effective. I guess the downside to systemic vanco is that it's IV only. Sorry, pharmacist brain kicked in... There is a lot that is/can be done pre surgically to protect against infection. Usually it's involves bathing/scrubbing with Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG). I understand it significantly improves outcomes.

Zyvox sounds familiar, but I wouldn't bet money on it. It was the last oral option before I had to go onto something IV.

Good to know about the CHG! I remember having to wash up before my first surgery, but I don't think it was with anything other than normal soap...

"I wish that no matter what I ate or how much of it I ate, I would be in perfect health for my age until I died."

One day. One day science will make a pill that lets you eat as much as you want and not gain weight. That and a pill to turn off your period unless you want to get pregnant. I just wish I'd live long enough to see those two things...

Though I have to say (and this surprises me greatly) there's a pleasure in NOT eating, too. I don't mean being hungry, because man that makes me grumpy, but stopping eating when you're full... that just feels good sometimes. I do enjoy being very full, but it's nice to know I can stop when I should, too.
