A YA author explained part of it well: YA books are basically the same as non-YA books, they're just shorter.
In addition to that, in my experience, I find the best new writers and the most interesting stories there. (Though of course since I mostly read YA, that would skew my view of things...)
I'll admit with my push to read and review 50 books a year, YA books being shorter appeals to me. However, when I find a great book like this one, I'd happily take a longer version of it! So it's a trade-off.
