League of Extraordinary Dancers

Back in December, I posted about this dance group. They had danced so amazingly well. (And that's a HD link! Better than the original link last year!) They were intending to put out a dramatic online series, and tonight it started.

First ep hereI can't tell if it's funny-bad or bad-bad. The name 'League of Extraordinary Dancers' has me cringing ( Read more... )

MAGICAL PACKING PEANUTS!

Ahem. So, I watched both and... I don't know if I'd call it bad exactly. It's just really, really overdone. Alex watched bits too and he said that it seems as though it's taking itself a little too seriously, which is kinda what I was thinking. The melodrama is a bit over the top.

I think my biggest issue is the feeling that they're not quite sure which way they want to take it. The idea of showing each dancer's story is cool, but if they went that direction it would've been better to make it more "reality TV." If they wanted to make it superpowers they could've just made them have super martial arts skills, like the second episode. Combining the two? It just ends up seeming corny. What are they going to do, dance someone to death? The idea of karate-ing someone to death is cool, and a lot of the dancing is sort of like martial arts anyway, but just calling it dancing is weird. Oh noes, the two rival gangs are going to dance at each other! Ends up looking like this:

Yeah, maybe "taking itself a little too seriously" is better. In the first ep... the kid has "dancing superpowers"(?) so the father wants to keep him home all the time so he doesn't discover them? And the whole senior prom stares in wonder as they dance. Good dancing, yeah, but the reaction was just so over the top.

I think I'd like it more if they just spent the 8-12 minutes dancing and doing martial arts and such, drop the whole storyline idea (or make it a whole lot looser/less serious).
