Ema hated going to the outskirts of the City. The slums were filled with prostitutes trying to avoid getting too close and drug dealers trying to sell the pretty lady a hit and that one creepy guy who hit on her every single she was in the area. Even in the daytime, the place wasn't exactly safe for a woman of her size and stature. Still, she felt safe enough; she was a GenCop, after all, and was as such properly armed with standard-issue weaponry, not to mention some home-made chemicals that burned when flung in someone's face. Never hurt to be too careful ( ... )

Most of his experiences with GenCops had been negative - all his life, he and they had stood on opposites sides of the moral chasm. He'd seen them down here in the slums, trying to get the proper payments out of the unfortunate victims - sorry, debtors - before the Repo Men descended on the scene. Some of them were polite. Some of them were forceful. Some seemed genuinely apologetic. (And then there were some like Jade, who smiled throughout the whole thing while barely meaning it.) So to see a young woman in the standard uniform locked in a screaming match with a drug addict (didn't think he'd ever sold to that one) over payment wasn't really an unfamiliar sight.

Kind of funny, though. Girl barely looked a day over twenty. Was she really supposed to be out here? Must have been dangerous, even for a trained cop.

Kasai reached for his cigarette and --

Skye. Had he heard that right? Ema Skye. That name was familiar. ... shit, it was familiar. And he knew where from, too, which some people would probably consider a ( ... )

Stupid ingrate of a woman. Ema was doing her a service--Gene Co didn't have to go out of its way to give final notices. They could just send the Repo Men in to do their grisly business and be done with the whole matter. The least these people could do was be grateful for the notice.

It never did occur to Ema that the hostility she received was directly tied to her own overly forceful, often cranky demeanor. No, it was entirely their fault ( ... )

"I tend to keep my eyes at ground level." Look up, and someone might come at you with a drawn knife. Or, more likely, a gun, in which case you were fucked anyway, but. He had heard the advertisements, the voice on the billboard, and now, hearing her talk in a halfway normal tone, she did sound a little familiar. Ema Skye, recipient of the first nonorganic heart transplant in ... a long time? Or ever? He had vague recollections of people trying it back when he was a kid, but if it hadn't caught on, then it probably hadn't been successful. So now it was ... and yeah, that'd been Hojo all right. The bastard had all but bragged about it for days, and that was where Kasai had picked up on the girl's name ( ... )

She wouldn't have taken his hand even if he had extended it. Sizing him up, she gripped the vial a bit harder. If it came to violence, she was sorely outmatched; after all, she really wasn't much more than an armed klutz. She'd have to fight dirty.

Honestly, she wasn't entirely sure why he was talking to her aside from the Hojo connection. Despite the fact that she didn't trust this Kasai guy at all, she did believe that much. "Was there something you wanted?"
