Kasai had seen the tabloids. He knew what was in them. While being considered her 'uncle' was enough to make him laugh hysterically in the privacy of his own apartment, it also depressed him. He thought he was better than that - quicker, more silent, in general far more subtle than the paparazzi could ever consider themselves to be. Apparently this wasn't entirely the case - or one of them had a really good telescopic lens. Either way, he was a lot more wary about meeting up with Ema than he used to be - and hoped that hiding in a seedy bar would keep even the bottomfeeders from following them ( ... )

Well, Kasai had obviously read the tabloids. Or perhaps he had started using some sort of drugs. Those were the only two hypotheses Ema could come up with concerning his demeanor as he came over and had a seat. Quite frankly, she didn't like it; even put-on like it was, the behavior didn't suit the man at all. "Oh yeah, tons," she answered flatly. "My life isn't worth anything if people aren't trying to butt into it ( ... )

Kasai felt like laughing again but only grinned, getting his drink and taking a long sip from it. She was bitter about all of this, and for good reason. If he had to deal with the paparazzi he'd probably go insane. Fortunately, in declaring him her uncle, none of the bastards seemed to care much about him. Though if they looked a little closer they'd see that the nationality difference was a bit of a stretch ... ah, but wait, the whole change your skin bit. Surgery really could do anything these days, couldn't it ( ... )

Ema could pass for part Japanese. If you squinted and turned your head the right way. In poor lighting.

Kasai was far better at playing this than she was, but then he'd been doing this sort of thing longer. He simply played along without skipping a beat; Ema had to wonder if his stomach knotted up the way hers did during these sorts of meetings, but reasoned that it probably didn't. That's what separated them, although Ema was acutely aware of the fact that she was slowly slipping downward to his--

Not slipping. Not even moving downward. This wasn't being criminal; she was simply being careful with all the hiding and the not-telling-anyone about these meetings. She could quit at any time, and really this was all Hojo's fault anyway. Dammit.

Ema watched as Kasai's hand went into his coat and tried not to let her anticipation show too obviously. "Glad I can keep funding your lifestyle, then." The statement lacked the levity she meant to inject into it, so Ema decided to sidestep with a change of topic. "Did you plan on ( ... )
