Despite the rude awakening yesterday morning with a three-way call freaking out about my passport being faxed to Wien, the people who are looking out for me are. Jerry sent me four albums. Two Four Last Songs recordings (Schwartzkopf and della Casa), a Schwarzkopf Arienalbum and Tebaldi's last recital. Jerry was there. Of course ( Read more... )

good choices...those 2 4last songs were the first commercial recordings (though there is one with flagstad live...she was the first to perform them)

the tebaldi farewell is so exciting!...i love the late tebaldi sound

Ah... so you DO listen to Lieder! I thought the story was Flagstad turned one down. You are right, though. I have now both Schwarzkopf recordings (the early one and the Szell (dir) recording), della Casa and a recent recording by Soile Isokoski. Sorry, no Fleming.

Tebaldi made me a little nervous; there were several times her voice didn't immediately respond. The sound, though, was warm and beautiful. So gorgeous, I couldn't do Schwarzkopf after hearing it.

yeah...both schwarzkopf sets are "needed" ...della casa is gorgeous as always...flagstad I believe was the first singer to sing the songs...there is a 5th song that Strauss composed for Jeritza and KTK sings it in her recording

its the size that always gets me with renata...its a wall of sound. you should track down the fanciulla del west MET broadcast....must be heard to be believed
