As I walked into my building today, I noticed a delivery man with an elaborate rose arrangement in a nice vase. I smirked and said to myself "What a waste of $70

awww bah humbug to you too! While I will agree with you Joel that flowers are not a very economical gift because yes they do die, that doesn't change the fact that they are still romantic, and I enjoy getting them. But on the topic of Valentine's Day... it is definitely way over commercialized, we shouldn't need some "hallmark holiday" to remind people that we love them... lol. Anyway hope you had a good V-day. I thought mine was going to suck, but it was surprisingly good afterall. -Tina
I would say the same thing about shrimp cocktail, or caviar...in fact, those things are far more fleeting than the beauty of flowers. Any great meal that I can think of is a waste of money - the enjoyment is so temporary, you have nothing to show for it at the end except an empty wallet, and your nutritional requirements can very easily be taken care of more cheaply.
The point of giving flowers, Joel, is not for your personal enjoyment directly. The point is to bring enjoyment to someone else, and enjoy that (and perhaps its residual effects). I happen to agree with you personally - I find little personal enjoyment in flowers. That means, however that people should not give me flowers...not that I should not give them.
flowers are truely a gift where the thought is what counts. sure they have no practical use, but the importance is not in what they are per say but what they mean. roses symbolize something and definately tells a person that you are thinking of them in a loving manner. the fact that you spent money on such a thing sort of says that money is not your biggest priority when trying to make your loved one happy, rather making them happy is your priority. in a sense, roses are worth the money more then most other gifts. anyone's face will light up if you give them roses.
I guess what I'm saying, is that I'm not sure why they would really make anyone happy. Sure, if taking $70 out of my wallet and ripping it to shreds would symbolize my love for Dana, I'd do it. But I'm not sure why she'd want me to do that. By shredding the $70 I'm hurting both of us in the long run.
