WHO: Solidus, Hera (open)
WHERE: Holodeck
WHAT: Target practice and child traumatization at the same time.

Solidus was rapidly discovering that Hera was quite the little trooper. She had adjusted better than any toddler could be expected to considering the circumstances. It was almost as though she had done all this before, or something like it. ( Read more... )

Hera sat quietly and listened to what Boss had to say. Watching him carefully as he demonstrated the weapon. Finally a question occurred to her. "Natural?"

"Er..." Solidus turned away from the range for a moment, considering how to explain the nature-nurture debate to a toddler. "Some people believe that people who are good at things are born that way." And then waste their lives in an obsessive quest to overcome their own inaccurate conception of genetics while refusing to wear a shirt, he thought sourly. "Other people think we are good at what we choose to be, and can be taught different things." And rebel against their own history, their own inheritance, bring down their own fathers. "I believe both these things can be true. You have natural talents, Hera," he pointed at her. "With help and teaching, those talents will become stronger."

She nodded her head. It sounded a lot like the things Leoben, and D'anna had told her. "I'm special." she said though there was a hint of a question in the statement.

He nodded, glad she understood. He'd been told that he talked too much, but clearly if a toddler could grasp what he was saying there was no problem. "That's right. But you can choose your own life as well." He turned back to the range and blew the head off a cardboard target. "You can only choose if you are strong, though," he growled. "If you are weak, others will choose for you, and that is wrong."

Susannah had arrived on base minus a weapon, something she'd rectified as soon as possible. Unfortunately, she didn't have a lot of experience with the nine millimeter she'd gotten, so when she'd heard the holodeck (whatever that was) was serving as a firing range, she'd wheeled herself on down.

And encountered a... man? Machine? Tentacle-hybrid mutant?? And a little girl. Susannah had seen some strange shit in her day, but this was still kinda new.

"Um, hello?"

"Hello," Hera said while kicking her feet.

Solidus paid no attention to the crippled woman. Still shaken- just a bit, though- by Hera's question, he concentrated on putting more bullets in more targets. This made him feel better.

Susannah was more than happy to be ignored by the terrifying cyborg thing. She holstered her gun and wheeled herself up to the girl. "Hello, sweetie. What are you doing here 'round all these guns, hm?"

"Boss teaching me." she said pointing at Solidus. "I'm a natural."

Anakin was starting to find his way around the base with more ease-- the Force usually helped when his sense of direction failed, but he was still somewhat proud of himself for finding his way to the holodecks on his first try.

He recognized the shooting range, and wondered if he'd forgotten a lesson with Kyle- but his excitement turned to bewilderment when he saw Hera.

"What're you doing here, little nerfling?" he asked, bending down to ruffle her hair.

The ruffling of the hair earned Anakin an annoyed look. Her daddy never ruffled her hair. She didn't know what a nerfling was but it better not be anything bad.

Solidus pointed at the brat. "No touching, boy," he growled. "She's learning. Don't distract her."

"Training?" Anakin asked, wrinkling his nose. He was totally oblivious to Hera's disdain.

"You can't teach a kid to shoot. This isn't Tatooine or the Jedi Temple."
