I love that scene in the snow--how aware Richard is even then of the privilege of others, and how he feels he has to twist that privilege in loops and turn their pity into his own power. How he demands an apology for being made to strike Anne, and thereby turns the striking into her fault--which is terrible of him, but also very true to character. It's a deeply creepy, understated scene, and very well done.

That's just what I was going for with that scene, and I'm so glad it worked for you. Thanks for commenting!

The moment before sense of this was heartbreaking, and it makes me almost want to cry, the way Richard does not equivocate about killing Anne, but yet there still is a sort of hesitation, a musing, a reflection that he would never admit to but which is there. I love He had hidden his smile in a clump of her cloak and Richard's removal of her red clothing before his killing of her, which has this ritualistic aspect to it that I really enjoy.

Ooh, thank you! This is brilliant. I love that he never really considers not killing Anne, but still isn't _that_ keen on it. I love it!

This is beautifully written - all the things unsaid and done, and said and not done, and how it's all doomed to play out as it will, right from the start...

"Thou playest the lord so well!"

Doesn't he just....

I should hire you to write summaries for my stories! How much would you charge? ;) Seriously, though, you've summed it up, and very eloquently.

And ooh, he really does. And that's why we love him. Or...some of us do, anyway.

Thanks for commenting!

*laughs* Pay me in flattery, it works every time!

I love anyone capable of that kind of skill in dissembling (but those who don't have it I adore, which is different *G*)

You're welcome - it was my pleasure with that sort of imagery to read!
