It had been nice to be invited to a Thanksgiving dinner, as awkward as Pam still sometimes felt around some of the people who'd known her before. The fault wasn't any of theirs; rather, a fact she found unavoidable. With everything else that had been happening lately, it would've been difficult not to be in a good mood, even if they weren't telling ( Read more... )

As much as he had enjoyed himself at the dinner, he had to admit he felt better now that it was down to the two of them again. He wasn't used to sneaking around, as much as it'd been a mutual decision to keep things quiet for the moment. He knew they'd have to tell them eventually, but it'd be easier if they were on firmer ground and figured it all out themselves. Now, though, they really had nothing to worry about.

"Thanks," he said, as he went inside, careful not to jostle Sam too much. She'd been running around with Simon Chicago the entire night, so it wasn't surprising she was down for the count. "Yeah, I'm surprised she didn't fall asleep sooner. She got a good workout."

He'd been about to start heading to the bedroom to put her down into her crib, but he paused, looking over at Pam as she came in, too. "Do you want to put her in her bed?"

He'd been trying, lately, to let her do a little more with Sam. There were little things he took for granted that he knew Pam didn't have a chance to do yet. This was basically one of them.

To say that Pam was taken aback wouldn't have been completely accurate, but she hadn't quite been expecting the offer, either, and she paused for just a moment, smile unwavering. "Yeah," she replied with a nod, her voice still low, "sure." She crossed to Jim slowly, careful as she took Sam into her arms, and spared a glance back at him over her shoulder as she walked into the bedroom. It would've been a weird thing to try to explain, with as long as she'd known and had feelings for Jim, but somehow, his wanting her to be a part of Sam's life meant as much as him wanting her in his own. The situation was still a bizarre one, but she was determined to do this right. It was all that made sense ( ... )

Rembrandt had woken up by then, and the half-wolf easily crossed the room to sit at Pam's side, obediently. He'd been sticking with Pam a little more often than he used to, Jim noticed. He hoped that meant the animal was accepting her, too.

"I think I can stay up a little while longer," he said as if he'd just decided that. He'd be lying if he said he hadn't wanted some time alone with her, too. He sat down on the bed, watching her. "Not a bad party, huh?"

Sitting with him on the bed wasn't anything Pam wanted to do without being asked to, even if nothing was meant by it, so she stayed standing a few feet in front of him, reaching down to pet Rembrandt's head when he settled at her side. "No, that was really nice," she agreed with a nod. More than anything, she'd been pleased just to be invited. That meant more than the dinner itself, enjoyable as the evening had been.

She paused for just a moment, then said, "Well, if you're staying up, I can hang out a while, if you want." He may have made it pretty clear, but she wasn't going to just start making assumptions about that sort of thing. It had only been a few days, after all; as well as it had been going, there still was, or so it seemed to her, a chance that she could've been pushing things. If he wanted time alone, she'd have been fine with that.
