in my experience taking a sem. off, since i didn't have money, was the first step to figuring it out. even now, i still have a blue print but it's better than... you know, DESK!!!! hehe
For me, I kind of knew since like 6th grade what I wanted to do with my life. Granted, I sort of changed my major partway through my freshman year, but it generally was still the same.
For you, you might make a list of all the things you enjoy, and they don't even have to be school-related. And then once you finish the list, you try to look for some underlying tone, something that would enable you to enjoy a bunch of the things you wrote down, and then take classes that get you to that point.
And I mean, hey, we all owe money to the school. I go to a private university so I owe more than anyone I know. It's called student loans. Get the education while you're young, and then pay off your debts once you have a REAL job after graduation. At least, that's what I'll be doing for many years to come. =)
You have list as listed above, hehe... Go through it, pick the top 10 if you have that many. If not, then 5. or 3. And During the summer, try and volunteer inthose interested places. You'll have a better understanding of what you want to do.
if you're not sure what you want to do, register for classes that seem intersting to you... or just choose classes based on professor reviews (my gov't teacher last semester told me not to take classes, take professors)
and you never know, you might stumble upon something you really really like and not know it
also, that's what college is for... gaining experience in things you might like
