Kidding. XD I wouldn't even be thinking about this so hard if I knew my audience better, but I don't, so I'm all... *does flappy things with arms of sweatshirt*
Seriously, though, I'd only warn about a major character death, rape, or sex including bodily waste or bestiality. I might sound like a dick here, but I'm always amused when people on the internet make a big deal out of being 'triggered', and I think, what about real life? Do they cry out in a movie theater because something is offensive to them and the movie trailer didn't mention that a minor character was going to be snorting coke in a bathroom at one point or something? Do they read newspapers? Do they just completely shut down when confronted with something disturbing? I realize that a minority of people do, but the majority of the internet can be bothered by something disturbing and move on without months of therapy. I mean, my father sot himself in the head, but I don't go into a rage every time someone does that in a movie or something.
I think my warning for that fic would be something like:
"mention of drug abuse by minor chara"
...cause do you really need to warn for a club scene? And the only homophobic thing I remember is heavily masked and I wouldn't even warn for it, unless I'm forgetting something?
Major things I would warn about: non-con, underage, major character death, and some of the more out there kinky things (incest if it's not made implicit by the pairing, watersports, bestiality). And I guess triggery stuff like self-harm, drug use or eating disorders only if it's a major plot point? But that's about it. But then maybe I'm not very sensitive or thoughtful? Idk
( ... )
I think I tend to fall on the side of overly cautious. Maybe it's the fandom I currently write in, but people get all bent out of shape if you forget to mention something. I like to not even worry about that (I had something blindside me where I didn't think it was a big deal because it was incidental to the plot, and someone posted some really horrible remarks about me personally because they were offended), so I over warn just to save my ass. I'd rather someone not read then have to deal with someone getting angry at me for perceiving a situation differently than I do. YMMV, though, and if you think it doesn't need to be warned for, then don't. :)
Have you thought about posting a blanket warning policy to your journal, where you say, "I generally warn if X, Y, and/or Z play a significant role in my fic, but if they are simply mentioned in respect to a minor character/don't play a large role, I don't warn.
Then when you post a fic, you could put "Warnings: None (please see blanket warning policy)"
