What makes anyone courageous enough to do something that they may fail at doing? Perhaps you ought to try to muster some Ahab like focus on your ultimate goal before everything else, and then go to it until the keyboard catches on fire. You can clean up your masterpiece thereafter.

It's fear that it's crappier than I remember that stays my hand. I love your reference to the manic Ahab, though. Everyone I work with, with one lone exception, is too stupid to make such literary references. Thank you for the suggestion and the fabulous allusion.

I've had my own enormously troublesome white whales to be slain, and still have others elusively roaming out there, so "I feel your pain."
If I may share some experience, I suggest just keeping at it and clean it up as you go along, and especially thereafter, after the fog of battle clears.
Besides, if writing fiction is your thing, then just do it.
Good luck with getting back to your desk and making progress.
