Reading your reviews is almost better than the ep...or rather, rewatching and reading it is the bestest :)
Bc Eve FTW all the way, and they might need an anthropologist on set (or just a well-rounded educated person??? :). But really, the setting up a structural conceit and then forgetting what that means is the best! John, the queen and Rodney the Harmony!double were just too good to be true. And the hitting people scene and the powerbar and... *bg*
yay! man, seriously, anyone who's ever taken a university course on anything would probably be a good bet for these people - never mind an anthropologist! COATS OF ARMS!
Oh man oh MAN. I think it took us like three hours to watch this ep. Because we had to pause it every time somebody on Medieval Planet changed clothes or walked into a room. Us: "omg, is that a PLASTIC CORSET?" etc.

Re: this is secretly a story about abuse (point two), I would just like to write this dialogue down for the record.
Harmony: Would it not be easier to beat him? Rodney: We don't beat people where we come from. Harmony: Why not? John: Well, we find it's not very effective in the long run ... unfortunately.
John, to Harmony: It's okay, sweetie. Sometimes he makes me cry, too.

Also: John's spidey-senses? Are totally real! Also he can climb up the sides of buildings.
Also: practically the best part of the hugging story? Is the part where John tries to figure out if other people know he likes them, and he goes up to Rodney who's up to his elbows in broken Ancient tech all "hey, we're buddies, right, buddy?" And Rodney who's not even listening says "right, as if I have time for that now -- go talk to Zelenka or somebody." And off John goes, CRUSHED.
Also he sometimes practices hugging his pillow. As well as the mannequin. Until he gets really good at it, and gives astonishingly good and comforting hugs.
And then, as you say, he ends up in jail. In the little below-floor-level cell Lorne was in. For HUGGING.
hahahahaha whenever I think about John being emotionally crushed (and doing the Charlie-Brown walk) I crack UP. Why is his emotional distress so funny? WHY? I love how he has so many emotions.
oh MAN, I forgot about his spidey-senses! THAT LINE IS SO AMBIGUOUS, PLUS THE SHOW IS SO AMBIGUOUS, THAT IT IS ACTUALLY POSSIBLE THAT HE HAS SPIDEY SENSES WTF.
thank goodness we've already got the fic for that. :)
I think I laughed at this entry almost as much as I laughed at the episode. Also, if you really write either of those stories, I think I may have to marry you.
1)a)b)c)d) is the funniest recap of this ever; LMAO. I also had to pause and stare, but I confess, I wasn't even thinking of culture ad history; I was thinking that I have seen middle school theatre productions with better set design than this!! Also: we're asked to believe in this episode is that SGA-1 has been maintaining a good trading relationship with the people on this planet for years without screwing it up, which is frankly more ludicrous than the tapestries. FTW!!--and it's just shocking and hilarious to me the way the trope of Season 4 is to, offhandedly introduce vast, improbable, technically impossible backstories for people and places! "Oh, hi, Larry! You guys remember Larry, right? He's been my best friend for seven years here." "We haven't even BEEN here for seven years!" *headdesk!*
2)Pru wrote this, with "Bang"! Well, sorta! I kind of abetted!
3)I am actually writing this RIGHT NOW. Well, sorta!!
7B) Somebody PLEASE write this one. Honestly--John practice-hugging = best conceit EVER.

OMG I know. The best of these is "No, Rodney and Katie have been dating all this time! And also having sex!" though I'm also fond of the recurring "John has a network of spies and informants who give him intelligence reports." They're so unapologetic and audacious about it, too, as if we haven't BEEN HERE THE WHOLE TIME.
I was absolutely thinking of Pru's story when I was writing that - but Rodney needs the pamphlet for reals! I am very concerned about him. *nod*
ALSO, holy shit Ces, you're writing a John-was-replaced-by-a-replicator-a-year-ago story? for reals? Because I might pass out from the sheer force of awesome that that story will produce.
... You're totally bringing in replicator!Shep and replicator!McKay, aren't you?
God. I think I got an endorphin rush just thinking about you writing that. Seriously, I have been wanting someone to take that on in some fashion since "This Mortal Coil."
he decided he didn't feel like taking over Atlantis and so has just been coasting and doing John's real job instead. Ahahaha, omg!! Write that.
(I completely steal this bit from Arrested Development, where they do awkward hugs like nobody else can) Now that you mention it, they did do that A LOT.
And everyone would assume that John had been replaced by a pod-person or a replicator or something, and would eventually get together and agree to throw him in jail. For hugging! Yesssssssssss.
Even though I liked the episode and had a great time, I was a little disappointed. I never feel like they cash in on the awesome tropes that they set up for themselves. I absolutely agree. (See also: DOWNTIME EP! Which turned out to be 'Sunday'. :| :|)
apparently CES is writing that, or some form of that (see above comments). OMG YAYS. It's awesome because now I a) don't have to write it and b) will get to read an awesome version of such a story when it's done. score!
