JoAnn's seems to always suck in terms of yarn and such. They're mostly a sewing / quilting store. Have you tried a Michael's or better yet, a Local Yarn Store (LYS)? At least there you'd have far more yarn option. ;)

Sadly, there are no lys in my area. I am bummed about that.

I'm not sure about how far it is from you but there looks to be Lazy Daisy (
2127 East Florida Avenue Hemet, CA 92544-4765) as well as a Daily Fiber Yarn Company (26205 Jefferson Ave #105, Murrieta, CA (951) 461-9590). Have you been to either? And though I'm not terribly impressed with Hobby Lobby, (I suspect I'm becoming a yarn snob) they still generally have a wider selection than the JoAnn's, at least here they do. I also spotted a couple of Michael's on the map of your area, maybe those would be helpful.

Hopefully some of that will help.

Wow...What do you know. There is a Yarn store close(ish) to me. Thank you, for all the searching, on my behalf. That was very nice of you. I really appreciate it!!!

Those pegs will likely not hold with glue. You'll need another loom to replace the broken one.

Alpaca socks are generally too warm for most people. Even people I know that live where it snows cannot wear alpaca socks for too long because it makes their feet too hot.

A few months ago, I checked with a few alpaca breeders that I know to see if their was a super washed alpaca sock yarn. I thought for my dad with the permanently cold feed due to diabetic neuropathy this might work well for him. Alas there is none. That means that socks (or anything for that matter) knitted with alpaca must be hand washed or it well turn to felt and shrink. Please be aware of that.

As for my sweetie and mom, I am sure you are right. They would overheat, in the socks. LOL! For me, I think they will be perfect, as my feet get VERY cold, even in summer. (Something about the nerves. I don't know.)

You can master looming! Fear not. My 10 year old can even loom a hat. Better than I can actually... I think the trick is to make sure the tension is tight on the yarn, but I really don't know as I've only played around with the looms and not actually made anything with them.

My pegs keep on coming out of my looms so I just keep on shoving them back in. I have considered asking my husband to use his glue he uses for his plastic miniatures to keep the pegs in, but it hasn't gotten too bad yet.

This is the only loom that has done it. And, as far as I know, I don't need it for any of my projects. So, all is good. =)

How exciting for you...part 2 is underway!! I hope you like working the socks...I love my hand knit socks. I'm not sure about using alpaca in your climate - might be too warm. I have 2 pairs of alpaca blend socks that are wonderfully warm and soft, but I wear them when the temps are really cold (below freezing). Also, as was already mentioned, they are probably hand wash only - they will felt if not washed properly. I just wanted to give you that warning so that you make socks you love and that you can wear and care for easily.

Yes...I am SUUUUPER excited. The looms will be fun. I think making socks, will be totally awesome. For me, I think alpaca will work, as my feet are usually FREEZING! (I was told my feet will easily get cold, for a while, as I had major surgery. The nerves are all wonky.) I am aware that they will felt, if washed any other way, than by hand. Thank you, though. I actually HAVE to felt a few items, for this part of my Project.
