I tried to make it through this book years ago because a friend thrust it on me because musician/motorcycles/travel. I couldn't do it. It was just so self-involved and negative.

It is, for most of its length. I kinda feel like the guy had a right to feel that way given the loss of his family, but I can see that it's a thing that's not super fun to read about. For me, how sympathetic I found him helped me keep going through the darkness, but people who like him less than I did or are otherwise not really inclined to have a wallow in tragedy may not want to. Weirdly, I think most of the cases where I would recommend it to someone would be to people who are experiencing loss or whose lives are otherwise really bad right now. It might help them to see someone else's attempts to cope. But people whose lives only have normal amounts of stress and badness in them are probably not going to want to dive down that far into sadness.

I hope he likes it/it helps him. I thought about sending a copy to a couple of friends of mine whose lives are pretty tough right now, but in both cases decided it wasn't the right match for them. But I know there are people out there who would find it profound and useful.
