the new year

Dec 20, 2009 20:54

I have two New Year's resolutions for 2010 (ish...since the old Pagan year technically ended October 31 and the new one kind of started then but also kind of starts tomorrow on Yule...it's complicated).  Anyway, my resolutions that will take effect starting tomorrow:
1. For each new book I want to buy, I will read two that I already own (and haven ( Read more... )

I get what you're saying about the Merry Christmas thing, but on the other hand--I say it because it's what I've grown up celebrating, it's sort of just a natural thing to say to someone this time of year, and I don't think I should have to stop saying it because I might offend someone. It's not like I meant to and most people probably don't think twice about it.

But now everyone's all uptight about everything and it's just... I dunno... whatever >.>

I understand how you feel, but I also feel like if I went around saying "Happy Yule" to everyone, a lot of people would get upset about it, and that's just not fair. I mean, if you want to say "Merry Christmas," go ahead, but then you don't have the right to get upset if someone says "Happy Hannukah" or Kwanza or Yule or whatever else.

(Not you specifically, "you" in general.)

Mhm, I understand that too. Honestly, I don't care what someone says to me lol I'm probably either going to say 'thanks' or repeat whatever they said to me.

But eh, we're all different.

I remember back when I worked at A.C. Moore, they told us to say 'Happy Holiday's to everyone but sometimes I'd slip and say Merry Christmas and I'd get some odd looks (like, oh great the one time I forget to say it I'm talking to a Jewish person or something--why are you even Christmas shopping then? >8I) and every now and then some people would be like, NO, MERRY CHRISTMAS.

You just can't win, with this.

I think "Thanks" is suitably non-commital.

On a slightly related note, friend and coworker of mine has taken to wearing a gigantic star of david on her workshirt in honor of the Jewish holiday. But! She also confided in me that her primary motive for doing this is to make people less likely to wish her Merry Christmas. I, for one, think it's hilarious! The thing is made of fucking aluminum for fuck's sake. It is large, shiny and, if rumors are to be believed, lights up (Though I have never seen it do such a thing, I choose to believe it does).

My friend, I think I will need to invest in a giant, light-up, aluminum Pentacle for my own work shirt.

Oh mans, I hate that. And lemme tell you, workingat Toys R Us I got it ALL THE TIME. I usually revert to Happy Holidays, which still manages to piss people off because it's not 'Christian' enough. I like to think of it as a nice happy medium, and less confusing than wishing everyone a Happy Chrismachaunnakwanzayulestice.

And oh mans, that reading books you already own thing? Since Saturday night I've read 3 complete books and am working on a fourth, with a fifth lined up and plans to finish three more that I've had sitting at near completion since, oh, ALL SEMESTER. >_< I think this is already more books than I read all summer. T_T

Good luck on the getting published angle. Not really much advice there. My mom's been trying for years and hasn't figured out the magic recipe, but I have a feeling the most important ingredient is luck- luck that you write the sort of story they want to buy, regardless of quality. : \ (Cough, Twilight, cough) But! I wish you good luck!! *hugs*

Reading isn't my problem...I read tons. I just have this bad habit of reading library books rather than books I've bought, because library books have deadlines whereas my own books do not. I read at least one chapter per day, so. I just need to stop getting so many library books (seriously I get like 10 at a time.)

And as far as getting published goes, I don't think it's really all that daunting. It requires good writing, a lot of market research, and dedication. A lot depends on your genre and the places you want to get published. Could I publish my experimental travel memoir with a large publishing house? Doubtful. But could I publish it with a small, indie press? I'd put money on it. There are so many magazines and indie presses out there that are looking for so many different things--it's just a matter of finding the ones that you click with.
