A characteristically unhelpful comment, but my professor of medieval literatures at Sarah Lawrence oft referenced a standardized modern compilation of medieval bestiaries that could unlock the codes of strange animal allegory peppered throughout many of the tales we read. I'll have to jog my memory for the details, but this link might suffice for now:
