HINDI:

fanaa is the best hindi movie i've seen in a long-long-long time. everyone should see it. kajol and aamir khan did amazing acting jobs and the music is good and the story was riveting. kashmir is so beautiful! romance/thriller. *****

parineeta had a great soundtrack and the dance cameo w/ rekha, "kaise paheli zindagani," was awesome ( Read more... )

haha the bull is ace.

salaam namaste was so grating - was it just me, or was the 'malu' character's skin tone unnatural ala peter sellers style?

i don't know what kind of person this film was trying to appeal to.
yindian sex ed classes, perhaps? pre-marital sex = babies.

AND what the fuck was up with that extended ice cream commercial 3/4quaters into the movie?!

yeah, after i thought about it more, i think salaam namaste was projecting a fantasy of nri life to people who actually have no chance to attain it. the humor was really immature and slap-sticky, so i think it was geared to a 'slum' audience. i can't imagine actual nri's or middle class indians enjoying the film...but who knows. many indians have terrible taste [it's the lack of humanities training in school i suspect].

ugh, i know, I NEED BEN AND JERRYS. wtf.

Nice, I really love those old Douglas Sirk movies! I would suggest "Written on the Wind" as well.

You should check out Fassbinder's "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul" and Todd Haynes's "Far From Heaven," both of which echo "All That Heaven Allows"...

I would just advise that you really make sure you want to go to law school--it's often considered an attractive default option for people who are tired of their graduate studies, but it's also kind of a cliche that these sorts of students aren't usually happy with that choice (well from the anecdotes I've heard). I'm sure you've put a lot of thought into it though.

Other than that, I don't think it requires a great deal of stressing out or preparation beforehand. (Have you taken the LSAT & chosen a school already?) Just ready yourself for an immersive experience, and be as open as you can to assimilating into the culture, and not just merely getting good grades.

Enjoy the movies!

yeah, i realize it's sort of a cliche. i'm preparing for the lsats now and have selected a few schools. but i don't really know much about the actual practice of law, so i'm not sure if i will actually like it. i am going to visit the u of mn law school over the summer and talk to people there to make sure that i'm not doing this b/c it is an obvious default.

what do you mean by "assimilating into the culture"?
